Here at Spirit of Joy (SOJ), we believe that we are called to go into the world to show the love of God through service. We take this responsibility seriously. Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church is involved in many Service/Outreach programs. Through our programs, we would like to serve not only the people of our congregation, the city of Gilbert, Phoenix area, Arizona, but wherever our services can be used. At the present time we are involved in:
To evangelize means to proclaim the good news of the Gospel of Christ. Jesus, in giving the Great Commission to the eleven disciples, says in Matthew 28:19-20, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things I have commanded you.” Imagine Jesus saying these words to us today. What would be our reaction? Impossible? Incredible? Absurd? Or would we think “Yes, Jesus really means me, too.” We are also under this obligation to teach others. We at SOJ are always on the lookout for new and different ways to teach and to serve our Lord. The word evangelism when broken down simply means to be an ‘angel of good.’ The good we bring is to welcome the stranger and simply love them just as the Lord loves them.

I-HELP (Women’s Homeless Shelter)
Working closely with Lutheran Social Ministry of the Southwest, Spirit of Joy offers physical building space to shelter homeless women. All the women are in transitional living conditions and are either employed or in job training. If you want to support this ministry, you can offer your time to prepare meals or mix with the women. There is also a need for bathroom items and business-type women’s clothes.
Save the Family
Collect items and aid families that are in need due to abus
e, lost jobs etc. We provide clothing, food, toiletry items, cleaning supplies; basically, anything that will make a house a home
Prayer Shawl Ministry
A group of people knitting and crocheting shawls that are intertwined with prayer and love then delivered to members, friends, or others in need of comforting. We are now also doing a Baptismal Shawl Ministry. These shawls are also made with love and prayer and presented to each person being baptized at Spirit of Joy.
Chaplaincy & Prayer Ministry
This service provides caring phone calls, prayers, or perhaps a home cooked meal, or even a ride to a doctor’s appointment or other needed services of this nature. Volunteers are needed to do visits on a weekly or monthly basis or as frequent as you are able.
The Service/Outreach Ministry Prayer Chain is as easy as reading your email and then praying. Requests for prayers are received via email or phone calls. Scripture is matched to go along with the request and a prayer is put together and sent out to our “prayer warriors.”
This is a series of four books on grief that is mailed at different intervals during a year’s time frame to those who are having an extremely difficult time with the passing of a loved one.
This table is manned every Sunday morning to help welcome everybody, but especially new visitors to SOJ. This is also a great place to get information about ways you can serve, what’s happening at SOJ, and ask any questions you may have. If the people manning the table don’t know the answer, they will cheerfully find it for you.
Getting to Know You forms
This is a ministry form that allows you to offer your specific gifts and talents. We have also put together a booklet of people in different occupations. Using this information will let you get to know the hearts and talents of other servants at Spirit of Joy. When you might need a service and if you desire to use someone from SOJ, you would have the information.
The Bible reveals Jesus as one who always welcomed the stranger. At Spirit of Joy, we want to take that welcome to a true action stage. As a church familly, we have sponsored several refugee families over the past couple of years. We are a friend to them. We plan a welcome reception for the refugees, visit them weekly, and invite them to social activities. We also have persons available to take the refugees shopping and to appointments. These families have come to the United States with the help of the U.S. government. Most of these families have spent years in refugee camps escaping war in their home countries. They truly are a stranger to this community. One of the wonderful things we do every year is to celebrate Christmas with these families. As we share and welcome them, it is very rewarding to be the hands and feet of Jesus to these families.
Service/Outreach/Evangelism at Spirit of Joy is always looking for needs in the community and already serves in many areas; however, if you know of another need, please let us know. If you decide to join with us in serving others, prayerfully consider the area that you would like to serve and then contact the church office at email@example.com.
